J's room, he bangs on the door with a golf club. The white fan falls to the ground. Then when Harry walks in the fan is back on the ledge. Even though the second shuttle takes off later then the first, they are neck and neck when they clear the atmosphere. When they are discussing the plan to jump the armadillo, A. Frost's left ear goes from having a clear earpiece over it in profile, to having a yellow earplug in from the front. The montages around the world show a boy listening to a transistor radio.
The boy has an old-fashioned earphone in one ear but continues to hold the transistor radio up to his ear as though the speaker were working in addition to the headphone.
Just after Harry says "prepare the world for bad news," air raid sirens start. There's a panning down shot of some air raid speakers next to a Coca-Cola ad, with a truck parked in front of it.
The angle then changes to a shot down the street same street, same speakers, same Coca-Cola ad , except the truck isn't in front of the ad any more. When the crews climb onto the buses to travel out to the shuttles, none of them are wearing sunglasses. When they exit the bus those that are seen are wearing sunglasses. However, the following 'slow mo' shot of everyone shows they aren't again. When they are drawing straws to see who stays on the asteroid, they show AJ pulling his straw.
It's the same length as the other straws shown, but when it cuts back to AJ he all of a sudden has the short straw. At the beginning of landing shuttles on the asteroid, Col. Sharp, pilot of Freedom, was wearing a black short sleeve T-shirt. At the moment of landing on the ground, he's wearing a flying jacket without leaving his seat.
When Sharp says "Houston, we're coming home", Bear is looking out at the Asteroid passing the Earth, yet in the next shot he is strapped to his chair saying "You Harry, you the man". When Harry and Chick are lying down and the spinning pillar goes over them, the pillar's direction of spin changes twice. Backward spin, then forward, then backward, then forward again. The front of the space shuttle explodes twice.
After it explodes the first time, it first gets bombarded with projectiles and in the very next shot, the front half of the plane with two crew members floating around inside are saying: "Houston! Then the front part of the shuttle blows up again. When AJ bumps into Bear his shirt is very dirty on his right side, but as he runs up the stairs it is much cleaner and has a sweat mark around the neck line.
Next shot on the tower and the sweat is not in the same pattern. After he slides down the cable the dirt is in a different pattern again. When the military come to get Harry from the rig, the shot alternates between the two. In three shots, Harry has a large speck of oil on his nose but on the fourth it has disappeared.
Cut to the next camera angle taken from outside as AJ leaves and he has a pair of boots tied together around his neck. They were not there in the previous shot.
When Harry is golfing off of the oil rig, the holes on the golf ball are spaced about a yard away. In the next shot, before he hits it, the holes are right together. It also goes from saying just "Srixon" to "3 Srixon," then the lettering gets angled, then he finally hits it. The first shuttle takes off some time before the second. Then both shuttles in the air shortly after they clear the towers. As Harry's crew is about to start drilling, Rockhound analyzes the surface.
The drilling head is already bellow the asteroids surface. When the camera pans back to Rockhound the drill head can still be seen slowly turning on the upper right corner. When Stamper is banging on AJ's door, a fan and about six cans are on the shelf. In the next shot, the fan has fallen off, but there are only three cans on the shelf. When Grace throws down Thurman because of frustration, she first grabs him by the back, but in the next shot he's facing upwards.
When Chick's son recognizes him on television, the camera shows a close up of his ex-wife with the phone in her right hand. However, the next shot shows her dropping the phone receiver from her left hand. When the team meets the flight crews for the shuttles, there are two munitions specialists, Gruber and another astronaut.
This other astronaut boards the shuttle, then he's never seen again, not even his body. When Harry is talking to the people at nasa about what is wrong with the drill his hands are on his hips. In the next scene he is leaning on the drill.
When Bear delays Harry from shooting A. In the next shot he holds it below his chin. After Sharp and Gruber have dismantled the nuke, general Kimsey and Truman still talks about remote detonate the nuke, even though it's not possible anymore.
When the crew has landed on the asteroid, and they're coming down off the shuttle, you can hear Harry tell Rockhound something to the effect of "Come down here to the flat area, and take readings. Harry knocks on A. Once he's inside the room, some cans and other things fall off the shelf a second time. Harry starts talking to Grace about how he is not coming back home.
His helmet is off and he appears to be inside the ship. He in fact, has just just gone outside the ship to replace AJ to trigger the bomb. He can't be inside and talking to Grace at the same time he is outside going to the bomb.
If he is going to the bomb, he can't be talking to Grace live in real time. When Harry holds his golf club to AJ's neck after finding Grace in his room the club face is off to the left of AJ's face, when the camera angle changes the club face is off to the right.
When Chick picks up his son after they get back to Earth, his son's head is first on his left shoulder, then in the next shot on his right shoulder, then back on his left shoulder in the next shot. The dog actually puts 3 different animals in its mouth. The next shot shows a much larger balloon type toy mostly green.
The third shot shows a balloon type toy with plates on its back. When in the Russian space station, AJ is in a little pit fixing something. He has a little snow hat. The next time he has nothing on. Then back again with the little hat. The first meteor is a direct hit on a street vendor in NY where the dog is chewing on one of his Godzilla figurines. To start with he's chewing a small Godzilla, then it cuts to the vendor tugging on it, then it cuts back and its suddenly a much larger one.
When AJ is playing with cookies on Grace's stomach on the last night before the launch, the car behind them alternately appears and disappears as well as moves around. A wide shot shows them well behind the car, then in a shot of Grace her head's right by the tire. The next scene, the tip of the club is facing to the left.
When the astronaut Sharp comes to his senses and decides to disarm the bomb while it is counting down, the digital readout is wrong.
Bruce Willis is talking to him and the time reads 40 seconds left. After 20 seconds of talking, he starts working on the bomb with a screwdriver and the time reads 35 seconds. Next it reads 30 seconds, then when the cover that holds the timer is removed it looks like it reads 45 seconds.
When the drillers are getting checked out at NASA to see of they are o. Then he is in a plain white robe. When the helicopters are chasing Oscar on his horse, a Wescam camera pod can be seen on the lead chopper only visible in widescreen versions of the movie. People in numerous locations all over the globe are shown reacting to various events simultaneously, all in daylight. The two crews are shown splitting up to walk to and board their respective shuttles.
Launch pads 39A and 39B are three miles apart. When showing the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs, the earth shown has features such as the Florida and Yucatan Peninsulas, which would not have existed 65 million years ago. Grass is clearly visible at the edge of the cliff when the Armadillo comes to a rest after jumping the canyon. It is not Turkish dialect but Azerbaijani Turkish dialect that is heard in all scenes which are from Istanbul, Turkey.
Azerbaijani dialect is dominant in Azerbaijan, not Turkey. Azerbaijani dialect is not used in Turkish broadcasts. An asteroid shoots from left to right toward the Chrysler Building, but in the shot where the asteroid blasts through the Chrysler Building and the other skyscraper and hits Grand Central Station, the asteroid comes from the right.
Fire cannot exist in the vacuum of space. Once the oxygen is either burned up or dissipated the fire would die, this would only take a few seconds. After the space shuttle Independence crashes onto the asteroid and AJ is looking for survivors, fire is burning all around the rubble. There is no oxygen in space, therefore fire cannot burn.
The Russian space station is an absurdity in itself: initiating a rotation to accommodate artificial gravity would in reality threaten the structural integrity of such a pronged modular craft, and spinning the station before docking would be unpractical, as it renders a normally tricky docking to be nearly impossible since the docking ports are on the external rotating pods. Furthermore, a rotating station would need its docking area along the axis of rotation, plus the docking vessel would have to match that rotation, and match its center of gravity along the docking point approaching along the station's axis of rotation.
The two shuttles separate their solid rocket boosters and external fuel tanks very close to each other, one just behind and to the side of the other. This would be recklessly dangerous as they could easily impact the other shuttle destroying it.
There are numerous errors in the depiction of the physics of space and microgravity and of asteroids their characteristics, their behavior and their effects. See trivia. Simulating gravity is possible, but the gravity would be felt only away from the axis of rotation. The way the space station and space shuttles are attached, it would be impossible for gravity to be felt on all normal walking surfaces.
And it would not be felt at all at the center. It would be greatest at the walls of the space shuttles farthest from the axis of rotation. NASA has modeled this using meter diameter cylinders like A Space Odyssey , and with large systems of a capsule, a 2km tether, and a counter weight. But the smaller the system, the more chances of dizziness if bent over because the gravity at the feet and head would differ.
The shuttle crews are taking on liquid oxygen from the Russian space station. During their briefing, Truman refers to the oxygen as their fuel. Oxygen is not the fuel; oxygen is the oxidizer.
The fuel is liquid hydrogen. It's explained in detail how the impact will cause a horrible freak tide, what it will do, and that one half of mankind will die in the nuclear winter. That's absolutely irrelevant. The asteroid has a diameter "the size of Texas," which means a volume of about million cubic miles.
A bigger part of the Pacific Ocean would evaporate immediately, so no matter if a wave or not. The earth would become "sterilized. So it is nonsensical to compare that impact with the event 65 million years ago. It's much different. Cosmonaut Andropov is shown walking normally after exiting the shuttle. In reality he would have great difficulty walking because he had been in a free-fall weightless environment for a year aboard Mir.
The surviving space shuttle takes off from the asteroid horizontally, like an airliner taking off from a runway. This is absurd. There is no air to provide lift for the wings, so the shuttle, with its engines providing thrust straight back, would simply trundle along the ground like a car. It doesn't use its maneuvering jets at any time, and they are far too feeble to lift the weight of the shuttle anyway. Nor do they gimbal the main engine, which would lift the shuttle vertically on an axis through the center of the engine; they swoop gracefully into the air after a long take off.
Second, they'd have to count on finding a clear length of ground on a debris strewn asteroid. When Sharpe retrieves the pistol from the safe, it is laying loose in the safe. It would need to be secured inside to keep it from being damaged and prevent an accidental discharge from it floating around in space, being banged against the safe's walls.
In a real space shuttle launch, the Solid Rocket Boosters and External Tank are not released at the same time. The SRBs are released first, followed by the external tank later. Due to the space observation technology that the Americans have. The "Meteor Shower" that peppered the Earth would be noticed long before they even reach 1, miles of Earth.
NASA discovers that the meteoroids came from a parent body asteroid with a Texas-sized surface, and that another impact on Earth will occur in 18 days, starting another extinction event, and eventually a 6-mile wide asteroid will impact into the Pacific Ocean and wipe out most life on the planet. NASA contacts Harry Stamper Willis , considered the best deep-sea oil driller in the world, for assistance and advice.
Frost Affleck. Harry and Grace learn about the asteroid and Harry explains he will need his team, including A. Once they have been rounded up and the situation is explained, they agree to help, but only after their list of unusual rewards and demands are met. As NASA puts Harry and his crew through a short and rigorous day astronaut training program at Johnson Space Center, Harry and his team re-outfit the mobile drillers, named the "Armadillos", that will be used on the asteroid.
When a meteorite from the asteroid wipes out the coastal area of Shanghai, NASA and other space agencies are forced to reveal their plans to the world before Harry and his crew go to Florida for training revisions and last-minute preparations.
Once in orbit, the shuttles dock with the new year old modified Russian space station Mir manned by Lev Andropov Stormare to refuel.
A fire breaks out during the transfer and the station is evacuated just before it explodes, with Lev and A. After 60 hours, the shuttles slingshot around the Moon at a maximum speed of Traveling through the asteroid's debris field Independence's hull is punctured and crashes onto the rock.
Freedom lands safely, but misses the target area, so the team must now drill through a 50 ft. When they fall significantly behind schedule and communications are about to fail after one and a half hour, the military initiates "Secondary Protocol"; to remote detonate the weapon on the asteroid's surface, which apparently will not have any effect.
While Truman delays the military at Mission Control, Harry persuades the shuttle commander to disarm the bomb so they can complete the drilling. Distracted by "Rockhound" Buscemi , who is having a mental breakdown, the Freedom crew loses their Armadillo and another crew member when it strikes a methane gas pocket and is blown into space.
Worldwide panic ensues as the mission is assumed lost and martial law is declared to evacuate people to underground shelters, just as another meteorite destroys most of Paris. Suddenly, A. As the asteroid approaches the Earth, it heats up, causing a dangerous rock storm that damages the bomb's remote trigger and kills munition specialist Gruber.
They realize that someone must stay behind to detonate it manually. After all the non-flight crew volunteers, they draw straws, and A. As he and Harry exit the airlock, Harry rips off A. Harry prepares to detonate the bomb and contacts Grace to say his last goodbyes. Unnamed Man - Fell onto a taxi.
Oscar Choice - Killed when the Independence crash-landed into the meteor. Freddie Noonan - Killed when the Independence crash-landed into the meteor. Max Lennert - Killed when his space buggy exploded. Gruber - Pelted to death by a rock storm. Harry Stamper - Launched himself at the meteor and was vaporized along with it. Deaths Total - 20,,???
