Was the publication of names a celebration of infant Tasmanian and Australian democracy? The Reverend John West founded the ATL and in with flourishes of his quill pen authored a charter to abolish shipping convicts from England to Tasmania. Mr Douglas was part of the influential reverend's founding core.
The Square is enormously significant. Indeed the ATL and the Australasian League was Australia's first home-grown movement for political self-determination. The story of Tasmanian and Australian democracy's birth is made up of many more chapters. All are pure gold. Knowing just a little of them makes an encounter with Launceston richer still. But Macquarie continued to order the removal of the northern headquarters to George Town against the wishes of the settlers.
He replaced Major Stewart who departed on the Elizabeth Henrietta with his detachment of the 46th Regiment. He recommended that building works in George Town were to cease and the headquarters be moved back to Launceston. Macquarie refused. He continued with developments at George Town as the headquarters until his departure from office in Samuel Marsden consecrated cemeteries in the Port Dalrymple area.
